Incidence of acquired aplastic anemia in Brazil

Introdução

Aplastic anemia (AA) or bone marrow aplasia is a rare disease, characterized by moderate to severe pancytopenia in the peripheral blood and marked hypocellularity in the bone marrow, being the most frequent of bone marrow failure syndromes. Furthermore, it is estimated that the incidence of acquired aplastic anemia is 2-4 persons per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year in Brazil, with two incidence peaks: the first among individuals aged 10-25 years and the second among those aged over 0 years, with no difference between the sexes, it is also observed that this is more common in the East than in the West.

Objetivo

This work seeks to analyze the epidemiological profile of mortality from acquired aplastic anemia in Brazil.

Casuística

this is a descriptive cross-sectional study with secondary data obtained from the DATASUS.

Método

Data were stratified by age group, gender and race, and were subsequently crossed with population estimates to calculate mortality rates.

Resultados

throughout the period, mortality prevailed aged 60 years or older, with an average of 2,741 deaths during the period from 2015 to 2020. When evaluating the period 2019 and 2020, there was an increase in the mortality rate of 14.7% affecting the age groups 60-69, 70-79 and 80-89 years. Regarding the race, the most prevalent was the white race, with 22% more prevalent in the white race than in the brown race and 84% more than in the black race. When comparing gender, there is no significant difference between the occurrence in men and women, both have similar incidence rates.

Discussão e conclusões

in view of the above, it is possible to note the main factors that contribute to the death of this anemia, in view of this, it is necessary to promote public policies for the prevention of such anemia.
